RN Officers,CPO, & Petty Officers that came over with HMCS Niobe in 1910. Group marching to Buckingham Palace to receive their Gallantry\Distinguished service medal awards in Jan 1915, the first Investiture of 1WW. I will show some more closeup shots of the hat a bit later. In the Italian language, the side cap is called bustina. It was adopted by the Royal Italian Army in the 1920s, and by the 1930s it was the main cap used by personnel belonging to the Royal Italian Army, the Regia Aeronautica (air force) and the Blackshirts. It remained in use until well after World War II. The former HMS Niobe (together with HMS Rainbow) was purchased by the Canadian Government for the newly formed RCN in Sept 1910 & many RN ratings came over with her, arriving in Canada on Oct 21, 1910. They were worn by men dressed as seaman for the first Gallantry awards presentation at Buckingham Palace in Jan 1915, a photo of the RN group (plus Army in background) marching to BP shown below.Īlso a group of photo of PO's on board HMCS Niobe taken just prior to 1WW. Very very few of these unique hats have survived to the present century.ġWW unfortunately (or perhaps for the ratings, fortunately) put an end to these hats. I am very fortunate to have in my collection a good example of the Royal Naval Sennet (straw) hats worn buy RN ratings from the mid Victorian period up to early 1915. ![]()
